![]() ![]() ![]() When first starting the book, you expect the first few chapters to help you get to know the characters of the story as well as the very beginning of a building plot (the reveal, as I like to call it). With the promise of realism in the story, I expected amazing things, but unfortunately, there were more flaws than anything. I know I should stop expecting things of books I take on to read, but I never learn my lesson. I don't read enough books with characters like that. I was really excited to start reading this book because it had a character you would see in everyday life she wasn't some insanely gorgeous person, she was a normal teenager battling acne and asthma, which could help with readers relating to the main character. I remember reading somewhere that books with long titles are usually a huge "if" when it comes to readers choosing their next book, but, this title proves that's only so if it's not as compelling as Acne, Asthma, and Other Signs You Might Be Half Dragon. When I found this on NetGalley, I immediately fell in love with the title, the cover, and the synopsis of the story. ![]()

![]() Take the first real how-to-section where Stan is talking about building objects and making them solid from simple geometric shapes. And it feels dated, Marvel comics certainly don’t look like this any more (for shame!)Īnyway – heading in to the first section one and – I suspect because I’m older, and I’ve read a bunch of how to draw things, I’m seeing things in the art that aren’t at all explained by Stan but are pretty fundamental concepts. Probably down to Stan’s bombastic stylings where you might want some more thoughtful words from John Romita. It’s a slightly odd book, compared with a lot of other how to draw books. Starting with the grandaddy of them all – How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema – this edition is Titan, 1986 – so I’ve carried it with me a long time. And how could I forget the greatness of Bambi, Roth’s animal familiar? Especially, since I found Layla, the main character, a bit too naïve at first. ![]() Those discussions woven into the plot led to some excellent character development. ![]() I particularly enjoyed the discussion of some more meaningful topics, like labels vs. Needless to say, this book features a swoon-worthy romance. Roth, one of the main male characters, was just so dreamy. The world-building was so good, and the premise was really fascinating. Ugh, there’s so much to love about White Hot Kiss. Trusting Roth could ruin her chances with Zayne, but as Layla discovers she's the reason for a violent demon uprising, kissing the enemy suddenly pales in comparison to the looming end of the world. Though Layla knows she should stay away, it's tough when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue. Then she meets Roth - a demon who claims to know her secrets. And even though Zayne is a Warden, part of the race of gargoyles tasked with keeping humanity safe, Layla's kiss will kill anything with a soul - including him. ![]() Trouble is, Zayne treats Layla like a sister-and Layla is a half demon, half gargoyle with abilities no one else possesses.
